HURRICANE IKE postponed our planned fishing trip to the Texas Coast for two weeks. We were a little apprehensive as to what we would find after the devastating news about the destruction of Galveston. Assured that Rockport, almost two hundred miles from Houston was livable my son drove my wife and I to our destination. I had purchased travelers checks for a period of three years in anticipation of the trip. I had planned to stay at our usual resort that would have cost seven or eight hundred for a week, but instead we stayed at an old motel that was built in 1948 so we had extra money to do some other things. When our week was up we went up the coast a hundred miles to our favorite hangout at Matagorda. Since our fishing place on the Colorado River had washed away we stayed eight miles from the beach. The road leading to the water was lined with large logs and trash that had been deposited during the hurricane at Galveston. We were fortunate to spend an evening and the next morning until noon combing the beach. I took a short swim in the surf, and when I emerged my gray hair was black from oil spills that happened during the storm. Luckily there was no fish or bird kill from the contaminate. When they sing the song about drill baby drill, there are plenty of offshore rigs along the Texas Coast. For good or bad, they are there, and except for occasional spills the beach hasn't been damaged a great deal. Before the authorities clamped down on the beach buggies, they were doing more damage than the drilling rigs to the sand dunes.
TRAVELERS CHECKS ON TEXAS COAST. I have traveled much in the United States, once in Canada, and several times in Mexico. No where but along the Texas Coast have I had trouble using travelers checks. Several times I have had to cash the checks at banks and been forced to pay with cash. Since on this trip my checks were three years old they were viewed with suspicion

FISHING PIER MATAGORDA PENNISULA

This long pier near the mouth of the Colorado River on Matagorda Peninsula is maintained by the United States Corp of Engineers. Due to minor damage from Ike it was closed when we were there.

HIGH RISE MOTEL ON THE WATER IN BACK OF WHERE WE STAYED. Since my wife is in a wheelchair we couldn't stay where people fished out their back door. Some nice fish were caught.
